The Forbidden Fruit
How would you eat if you weren’t trying to lose weight?
This is a question I often ask my clients.
Usually, their first response is that they’d probably eat copious amounts of chocolate, ice-cream and donuts.
However, when I ask them to sit with the question for a while, they begin to realise that they’d soon become bored with these types of foods and that their taste buds would start to crave a wider variety of delicious foods, including fruits and vegetables.
When your favourite foods are no longer considered off limits they often lose their “forbidden fruit” appeal.
With weight loss being irrelevant to your food choices you’d probably stress a lot less about your food choices.
You’d be free to eat when hungry, stop when full and move on with living your best life until you felt hungry again.
Emotional eating probably wouldn’t happen as often either.
Since no food is off limits, bingeing on a jar of Nutella would not be as soothing and you may start to deal with your emotions in other ways, such as calling a friend or going for a walk in nature.
Even if you did decide to relieve the stress of the day with a tub of ice-cream, you wouldn’t have to deal with any feelings of shame or guilt and may even end up feeling a lot better.
Often, when I first discuss the possibility of Intuitive Eating with a client, they are concerned that if the focus is taken away from weight loss then nutrition may also be forgotten.
However, what actually happens is that it becomes much easier for the client to make healthy food choices when they are not distracted by diet culture rules. Rules such as calorie counting and what foods are allowed and not allowed on the particular diet they are on.
Instead of trying to make sense of all the conflicting dietary rules, they begin to tune in to the needs of their body, the body that just wants to feel good.
This is what true food freedom looks like.
Where you give yourself unconditional permission to eat all the foods you enjoy.
No matter your history with food and dieting, it is possible to reach a place where you have a peaceful, nourishing relationship with food.
A place where you honour your health with gentle nutrition.
How would you eat if you no longer had to worry about losing, gaining or maintaining your current weight?
I’d love to know!
